Why the fuel filter matters after a misfuel

Putting the wrong fuel in your vehicle is a common mistake, but the way it is handled afterwards makes all the difference. When petrol enters a diesel engine, or diesel enters a petrol engine, the fuel system is contaminated. The fuel filter is one of the first components to suffer, because it is designed to trap particles and protect the injectors and pump. Once contaminated fuel passes through it, the filter can no longer do its job properly.

At EEK Mechanical, we collect your vehicle by tow truck and transport it to a GBIFDA-certified workshop, where manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery is completed. This work is never carried out at the roadside or at the collection location. The workshop environment is where the correct equipment, procedures and replacement parts are available to do the job safely and thoroughly.

What a workshop actually does

A proper recovery involves more than removing the wrong fuel. The workshop drains the contaminated fuel from the tank and lines, then replaces the fuel filter with a new, manufacturer-specified part. The system is flushed to remove residual contamination before fresh, correct fuel is introduced. Depending on the vehicle and how far it was driven, additional checks may be needed on the pump and injectors.

Each step exists for a reason. The filter replacement ensures no trapped contaminants are released back into a freshly cleaned system. The flush clears the lines and components that the filter alone cannot reach. Skipping either step leaves the vehicle vulnerable to problems that may not appear immediately but can become costly later.

What happens when steps are skipped

If a fuel filter is not replaced after a misfuel, contaminated residue can remain trapped inside it. When the vehicle is restarted, that residue can be pushed through to the injectors and high-pressure pump. The result is often rough running, poor performance, or in more serious cases, component failure that requires substantial repair work.

Similarly, a system that is not properly flushed can retain traces of the wrong fuel. Even a small amount of petrol in a diesel system reduces lubrication, while diesel in a petrol system can foul spark plugs and sensors. These issues are avoidable when the full manufacturer-spec recovery is completed at a certified workshop, rather than a partial fix that only addresses the tank.

What to do now if you have misfuelled

Do not start the engine or turn the ignition on, as this circulates contaminated fuel further into the system. Move the vehicle to a safe position if you can do so without starting it, then call us. We will arrange a tow truck to collect your vehicle and take it to a GBIFDA-certified workshop for manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery.

Recovery costs vary by tow distance, after-hours timing and vehicle type, and every job is fully itemised. You can review our rate card for transparent pricing. Any component repairs needed after driving on the wrong fuel are separate from the recovery invoice and can be substantial, which is why acting quickly matters.
