Wrong Fuel in a Fleet Vehicle: Your First Five Minutes
A calm, step-by-step guide for fleet drivers who have just misfuelled. What to do in the first five minutes to protect the vehicle and the job.
Stop, switch off, and stay calm
Realising you have put the wrong fuel in a fleet vehicle is unsettling, but the first five minutes matter more than the next five hours. The single most important action is to stop what you are doing and switch the engine off immediately. Do not start the engine, do not turn the key to the accessory position, and do not attempt to move the vehicle under its own power. Starting the engine circulates contaminated fuel through the pump, lines and injectors, which can turn a straightforward recovery into a substantial component repair.
Do not try to fix it yourself
It is tempting to siphon fuel, add the correct fuel on top, or "just drive it a short distance". These actions can worsen contamination and increase the risk of damage. The correct fuel and the wrong fuel do not simply separate, and running the engine even briefly can push the wrong fuel deeper into the system. Leave the vehicle where it is, apply the handbrake, and keep the keys out of the ignition.
Make the vehicle safe and call for collection
If you are on a forecourt, inform the attendant and move clear of the pumps. If you are at the roadside, switch on your hazard lights and position yourself safely away from traffic. Then contact EEK Mechanical on 0808 280 6346. Our team will arrange for a tow truck to collect your vehicle from the forecourt, roadside, home or car park and transport it to a GBIFDA-certified workshop, where manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery is completed. Recovery work is carried out only at the workshop, never at the collection location.
Record the details for your fleet manager
While you wait, note the time, location, the fuel type you used and roughly how much went in. This information helps your fleet manager and our team plan the recovery. Do not attempt to restart the vehicle at any point. If the engine was already running when you noticed, switch it off as soon as it is safe to do so and leave it off.
What happens next
Once collected, the vehicle is taken to a certified workshop for manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery. The cost of recovery is fully itemised and varies by tow distance, after-hours timing and the vehicle itself, so we direct readers to our rate card for transparent pricing. If the engine was started after misfuelling, any resulting pump or injector repair is separate from the recovery invoice and can be substantial, which is why switching off immediately is so important.
If you have just put the wrong fuel in a fleet vehicle, act now. Call our 24/7 customer hotline on 0808 280 6346 and we will arrange collection and workshop recovery. For fully itemised pricing, see our rate card.
