Plug-in hybrids and misfuel risk: why wrong fuel still needs full recovery
Putting petrol in a diesel PHEV or vice versa can damage the fuel system. Here's why full workshop recovery matters for plug-in hybrids.
Why plug-in hybrids are easy to misfuel
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are increasingly common on UK roads, and their dual powertrains can create a false sense of security. Because a PHEV runs on both battery power and a combustion engine, drivers sometimes forget which fuel the engine actually needs — or assume the electric side will carry them through a mistake. The reality is that the combustion engine still has a conventional fuel system, and filling it with the wrong fuel carries the same risks as any other vehicle.
Diesel and petrol PHEVs both exist, and the filler neck, cap colour, and dashboard prompts vary between manufacturers. In a busy forecourt, a moment of distraction is all it takes to select the wrong pump.
The electric motor does not protect the fuel system
A common misconception is that a PHEV can simply run on battery power after a misfuel, making the mistake harmless. This is not the case. The moment the engine starts — or in some designs, the moment the ignition primes the fuel system — contaminated fuel can circulate through the pump, lines, and injectors. Petrol in a diesel system reduces lubrication and can damage high-pressure components, while diesel in a petrol system can foul injectors and sensors.
Because PHEVs switch between electric and combustion power automatically, the engine may fire up without the driver consciously choosing it. This means contaminated fuel can be drawn into the system even when the driver believes they are running purely on battery.
Full system recovery is still required
At EEK Mechanical, the process for a misfuelled PHEV is the same as for any road vehicle. We dispatch a tow truck to your location — whether that is a forecourt, roadside, home, or car park — and collect your vehicle. It is then transported to a GBIFDA-certified workshop, where manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery is completed by trained technicians using proper recovery equipment.
Recovery is never attempted at the collection location. The vehicle is safely loaded and towed, and all fuel system work happens at the workshop. This ensures the contaminated fuel is removed correctly and the system is checked against the manufacturer's specification before the vehicle is returned to you.
What to do if you misfuel a PHEV
If you have put the wrong fuel in a plug-in hybrid, do not start the engine and do not rely on battery mode to move the vehicle. Leave the vehicle where it is and call our customer hotline on 0808 280 6346. Our team is available 24/7 and will arrange vehicle collection and tow-to-workshop recovery.
Recovery costs vary by tow distance, after-hours timing, and vehicle type, and every job is fully itemised. You can review our rate card for transparent pricing. If the vehicle has been driven after the misfuel, component repairs such as pumps or injectors may be required separately — these can be substantial, so acting quickly is the best way to limit further damage.
Act now to protect your PHEV
Misfuelling a plug-in hybrid is more common than many drivers expect, but the right response makes all the difference. Contact EEK Mechanical on 0808 280 6346 and we will arrange collection and manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery at a GBIFDA-certified workshop. For itemised pricing, see our rate card.
