## Recognising the warning signs early

Coolant entering the engine oil is a serious condition that rarely announces itself loudly. The most common early indicator is a milky, frothy residue on the underside of the oil filler cap or dipstick, often described as looking like a pale brown or cream-coloured emulsion. You may also notice the oil level rising without explanation, a sweet smell from the exhaust, or persistent overheating that cannot be traced to an obvious external leak.

These symptoms suggest coolant is mixing with the oil, which compromises the oil's ability to lubricate and protect internal components. The cause is often a failing head gasket, a cracked cylinder head, or a damaged oil cooler. Whatever the source, the mixture of coolant and oil forms a thick sludge that cannot perform the job of clean engine oil.

## Why driving makes the damage worse

Continuing to drive with coolant in the oil accelerates wear dramatically. The contaminated mixture loses its lubricating film strength, allowing metal surfaces to contact each other under load. Bearings, camshafts, and cylinder walls are particularly vulnerable, and the damage can progress from repairable to catastrophic in a short distance.

Coolant is also corrosive to internal engine surfaces when circulated through the oil galleries. The longer the contaminated oil is pumped around the engine, the greater the risk of scoring, pitting, and premature failure of components that would otherwise have been salvageable. Stopping the vehicle promptly is the single most effective step you can take to limit the repair scope.

## How tow-to-workshop recovery works

EEK Mechanical arranges for a tow truck to collect your vehicle and transport it to a certified workshop. The oil system recovery itself — draining the contaminated oil, flushing the system, and refilling to manufacturer specification — is completed only at a GBIFDA-certified workshop, never at the roadside. This ensures the work is carried out in a controlled environment with the correct equipment and disposal procedures.

Once at the workshop, technicians assess the extent of contamination and identify the underlying cause before carrying out the manufacturer-spec recovery. This approach protects your engine from further damage during transport and gives the workshop the best possible chance of a complete, lasting repair.

## What to do right now

If you suspect coolant has entered your engine oil, stop driving immediately. Switch off the engine and avoid restarting it, as even idling circulates the contaminated mixture. Note any warning signs you have observed — oil appearance, temperature behaviour, and any unusual smells — as these details help the workshop diagnose the fault accurately.

Contact EEK Mechanical and we will arrange collection of your vehicle by tow truck and coordinate its recovery at a certified workshop. Costs vary depending on your vehicle, the distance involved, whether the call is after hours, and the severity of the contamination, and every recovery is fully itemised.
